This year, in particular, it seems as if summer has flown by. With autumn looming in the shadows, it’s the perfect time to embrace the last month of summer- and I can’t think of a more quarantine friendly activity than enjoying an ice-cold glass of wine in the comfort of your own home!
Below is a list of 5 wines that are sure to cool you down on a hot, summer day. I would love to hear your summer favorites or if you enjoyed one on the list!
Spritz Tip: I love a wine spritzer in the summer. Best of all, you only need two ingredients plus garnish! No recipe is needed, just remember the ratio of wine to sparkling water should be about 3-1. Your choice of sparking water matters, you’ll want strong, long-lasting bubbles; Brands like Q, Canada Dry, Schweppes, or Fever-Tree are great options. If you’re looking to elevate your spritz, muddle some fruit in the bottom of your glass or try a flavored sparking water.
Two of My Favorite Spritz :
White Wine, Sparkling Water, Garnish with a Lemon
Rosé, Sparkling Water, Garnish with a Lime
Gustave Lorentz D'Alasace Brut Rosé
Gustave Lorentz has been producing wine for over 180 years in the Alsace wine region of France. This organic, brut, sparkling Rosé encompasses hints of strawberry and citrus and is entirely comprised of Pinot Noir grapes. As a result of using the Méthode Champenoise, the bubbles are lighter and delicate, mimicking a traditional Champagne. Served best as an aperitif or accompanied by light Mediterranean food.
Scaia Garganega Chardonnay
This is not your typical, full-bodied, texturally-distinct Chardonnay. This white is made up of both Garganega and Chardonnay grapes. If you are unfamiliar with Garganega grapes they are an indigenous Italian grape that tends to fall on the dryer side, with hints of citrus and melon accompanied by a slightly nutty finish. Pairing the Garganega and Chardonnay grapes together creates a smooth, bright and refreshing white wine. Located North-East of Verona near the Italian Alps, Scaia has perfected red, rosasto, and white wine using only steel barrels. While I would suggest trying all five of their wines, this Garganega Chardonnay should be on the top of your list. The pineapple, mango and citrus notes pair perfectly with any light, warm-weather hors d’oeuvres or entrée- it also makes for a great aperitif. It also has a glass stopper rather than a traditional cork, an unexpected and elegant touch!
Domaine Houchart 2018 Rosé
It’s hard to make a summer wine list devoid of a Provence Rosé. I chose this particular rosé because of its classic notes accompanied by a clean finish. If you are looking for a rosé that will please multiple palates, you should keep a few of these on hand during the summer months!
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling Dry
If you are looking for a great everyday wine, this is it! I have yet to come across a Chateau Ste. Michelle wine that I haven’t enjoyed- I’ve previously written about the Chateau Ste. Michelle Indian Wells Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, which is still a favorite to this day. This simple Riesling embodies green apple, citrus and a slight honey flavor. Pairing perfectly with any light dish or as an aperitif.
Champagne Comtesse Gérin Grande Reserve Brut
Champagne should be enjoyed year-round. I chose this particular Champagne because of the fruity, cirtusy notes brought forward by the Pinot Meunier grapes- making up 50% of the cuvee. The flavor profile for this particular Champagne is perfect for a warm summer day.
