Improve Your Workspace & Mental Health While Working From Home

How to improve your space and mental health while working from home. Must have items that will optimize your productivity!

The world is in flux and so many of us are confined to working and living within the same space which can be challenging for countless reasons. One simple yet impactful change to your environment can make a significant difference in your peace of mind and productivity. Whether you are able to invest in one or all of these items, it’s important to surround yourself with items you love. Below is a list of 12 things to improve your productivity, mood and organization while working from home!

  1. A file cabinet is one of the least glamorous items I could put on this list but owning one is necessary. If you are working from home, keeping all of your materials organized and easily accessible is invaluable. Moreover, the ability to clean your desk off at the end of the day and put everything away, will help you separate your work and relaxation time. It will also prevent your work space from becoming cluttered and disorganized. If you have room, use extra drawers for important life documents such as leases, health insurance information, bank information, etc. Keeping these things organized in one secure location will alleviate stress and provide peace of mind.
  2. This chic pencil holder is made by a family-run company based in South Carolina. It’s made out of recycled stone dust, making it an eco-friendly option. The timeless, durable design will last you a lifetime. It comes in three neutral colors; white, grey and charcoal.
  3. Having a notebook on hand while working from home is essential. Decomposition by Michael Roger is a family-owned and operated company that makes eco-friendly notebooks and stationery. There are dozens of designs to choose from, created from 100% consumer waste.
  4. Contrary to what you might be thinking, I did not include this for vanity reasons. As video calls become more and more a part of our daily work, it is important to maintain professionalism during these interactions. This will prevent you from struggling to find that ‘perfect’ light and make every call clear and professional. You can also use it for your zoom happy hour- it will erase unflattering shadows and make your eyes pop!
  5. Scent has the ability to completely change your mood. Don’t underestimate the power your favorite candle can have over your productivity. This coffee scent will wake you up, while wrapping you in warmth. Each candle is handmade and your purchase will support female refugees at Prosperity Candle in the US.
  6. The most important thing you can do to optimize your work day is proper time management. This planner allows you to organize your day hour by hour, to ensure that you complete everything on your to-do list. I usually do a rough plan at the end of the day for the following day and revise it in the morning while I drink my coffee. It will keep you on track and alleviate stress.
  7. This item completely plays into the “little things”. There is something about reaching for your favorite cup in the morning that will actually have a positive impact on your day.
  8. It’s important to make your work space feel warm and inviting. Do away with cold desk lamps and bring in lighting that makes your space feel cozy and showcases your style.
  9. Use a picture frame to showcase your favorite people, a special memory or your favorite quote. This will be the most personal part of your space. Having something to glance at throughout the day can provide motivation or a temporary escape.
  10. Greenery is so important when you are stuck inside all day. This plant grows slowly and is tolerant to low light, drought and neglect. Even if you lack a green thumb, you will be able to take care of this ZZ plant. Faux options just don’t do the trick, bringing actual life to your space will make a huge impact!
  11. Light therapy can make a major difference in your mental health. We can’t always control where we have to work. If you are working in a space that lacks natural light or you live in a predominantly grey climate, it may be affecting your mental health. This lamp mimics a bright, sunny day. It can boost your energy, enhance your focus and elevate your mood!
  12. Taking notes, making lists and quickly jotting something down happens constantly throughout the day. This Post-It note holder is both extremely useful and visually appealing. It matches the pencil holder above and is made by the same family-run company. Made out of recycled stone dust, its eco-friendly and will last a lifetime.

While working from home for the past four months, I have come to realize how impactful a workspace is on productivity and mental health. It can be isolating and overwhelming to take on your daily tasks alone. Investing in the space you inhabit is a form of self-care. In addition to that, taking time to step away from your computer or work area throughout the day is also important. Get up and walk around, make sure to eat your meals in a separate area and check-in with others who are in the same position as you. Your mental health is important, yet so fragile during this time. Know that you are not alone if you are struggling, things will eventually get better. Below is a link with mental health resources, if you are looking for addition help.
